10 Questions for Going Deeper with God in the New Year

As we start a new year — giving thanks for all that was, and looking ahead to all that will be — we find ourselves in a period of time where we experience a sense of ‘resolve’. We think more deeply about changes we want to make in our lives.

If you don’t know where to start, here are ten questions that I’ve found helpful (adapted from Donald Whitney), to help us think about how we can go deeper with God in 2026:

  1. What is one thing you could do this year to increase your enjoyment of God?
  2. What is the most humanly impossible thing you will ask God to do this year?
  3. What is the single most important thing you could do to improve the quality of your family life this year?
  4. In which spiritual discipline do you most want to make progress this year, and what will you do about it?
  5. What is the single biggest time-waster in your life, and what will you do about it this year?
  6. Who will you pray most fervently for and share the gospel with, that they may come to know Jesus? (who’s your One More?)
  7. How will you intentionally go deeper in sacrificial love in order to strengthen your church over this coming year, practically and financially?
  8. What one thing could you change to deepen your prayer life this year?
  9. What’s the most important way you will depend on the Holy Spirit, to make this year different from last year?
  10. What single thing that you plan to put into practice this year will matter most in ten years? In eternity?
